Charming people is part of the game and essential to my business. I can smile for cameras, hug fans, and blow kisses. I’m constantly aware of the importance of my media presence. I’ve never had a glitch in that department.
That’s why, when a rookie female cop, Violet Hawks, pulled me over for speeding, and then proceeded to arrest me for no good reason—other than being insulted by the fiasco of the whole thing ---and my manager told me to charm the people of Indian Lake—I figured, piece of cake. Right?
I wasn’t prepared for my reaction to them. All of them.
In the course of “laying low” and out of the media spotlight, also to please my manager, Harry, who is usually right, I got dragged into helping raise money for a Community Center for foster kids. Then I met some of those foster kids who were adopted by Violet’s sister and her friends, Rand and Beatrice Nelson. I hadn’t figured I’d warm up to so many families. Sure, I had my own friends who lived in town, Austin and Katia McCreary, but I’d only associated with them out of town—at the Indy 500 and at car auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona. I’d never been to Indian Lake before that day of my arrest. The day that changed my life.
I figured I’d do my community service, have some publicity photos taken, pay my speeding ticket fine and be done with the place.
During the race, I was injured, had to have surgery and at the insistence of Austin and Katia, I was back in Indian Lake recuperating. I hadn’t figured that Violet would stay all night in the hospital with me. I hadn’t figured she’d be anything other than the assertive, focused police detective she was.
Violet was not only good at her job, she was exceptional. She dug into my past and found secrets and skeletons I thought had been long buried. I was wrong again.
In the process, I walked out on Violet. She’d betrayed me for the sake of her job. A promotion. She collared her perp. She arrested my long lost childhood friend, who had taken the very wrong route of drug trafficking. You’ll have to read the book to see how we find our HEA.
