The Secret

Let it Snow review

Let it Snow
Maureen Johnson, John Green and Lauren Myracle
October 2nd 2008/September 5th 2013 (UK)
Penguin UK

An ill-timed storm on Christmas Eve buries the residents of Gracetown under multiple feet of snow and causes quite a bit of chaos. One brave soul ventures out into the storm from her stranded train and sets off a chain of events that will change quite a few lives. Over the next three days one girl takes a risky shortcut with an adorable stranger, three friends set out to win a race to the Waffle House (and the hash brown spoils), and the fate of a teacup pig falls into the hands of a lovesick barista.

A trio of today's bestselling authors - John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle - bring all the magic of the holidays to life in three hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and kisses that will steal your breath away.

Well, if I wasn't in the mood for Christmas before reading Let it Snow, then I sure am now. Let It Snow was a completely adorable series of stories by three brilliant authors and while I didn't think that the stories were anything amazing, they were all fun and Christmassy. And really, that's all I wanted.

I think that Maureen's story - The Jubilee Express - was my personal favourite. It's about a girl named Jubilee who, as a result of her parents getting arrested, is sent on a train to her grandparents in Florida. Considering the massive terrible storm going on in all of these stories, the train doesn't get very far. This story was really fun and sweet, and I really liked Jubilee a lot. I will say that at first, I wasn't really sure where the story was going, but after it got into it, it was just a very sweet, very Maureen Johnson story.

John Green's story - A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle - was probably my least favourite of the three stories, but that doesn't really mean anything because they're all very good and I still enjoyed it a lot. It was in the same sort of vein as John Green's less tragic stories,  just sort of being funny and sweet and having good characters with mildly annoying names. For some reason, the names of the characters in John Green's stuff annoys me. But that's a really minor quibble. It was definitely the funniest of all the stories.

I also really liked Lauren Myracle's story - The Patron Saint of Pigs. It was definitely the most Christmassy of all the stories and I'd never read something by Lauren Myracle before, so I enjoyed getting to read something of hers for the first time. Even though it took a while to get good, I thought that it was really enjoyable and, like all the other stories, fun and sweet. I don't know how many times I'm going to say that in this review. A lot, apparently. I think the thing that made me like this story so much, though, is that it was the one that really brought all three of the stories together. While the first two are still connected, it was in this story that the characters from all other stories appeared in this story had kind of been running through the other two as well, so it was a nice culmination of all the stories. Plus, adorable tiny pigs.

I don't really know what else to say about Let it Snow. It was a seriously cute collection of stories by three great authors that are perfect for Christmas or just a cold snowy day where you're stuck inside and don't know what else to do. If you like any of these authors, or short romantic stories, or Christmas, then I would check this book out.

After college I became a professional photographer shooting skiing and rafting in the Colorado Rockies to pay the bills and while birding ha...
